Release: Montgomery County Receives $6 Million In Restore New York Funding
Village Of Canajoharie Project Receives State's Only "Special Project" Designation
FONDA - County Executive Matthew L. Ossenfort announced Monday that Montgomery County has received a $6 million award through Round 5 of the Restore New York Communities Initiative will which allow for demolition and remediation at the former Beech-Nut facility. The Village of Canajoharie is the only project in the state to receive a "special project" designation
"I believe this is the largest grant award the County has received to date," County Executive Matthew L. Ossenfort said. "I couldn't be more excited about what this means for the future of the Exit 29 Site. So much work has gone into this project and I am extremely proud that we have received the 'Special Project' designation," he continued. "Our team will continue this momentum until the project is completed."
The County has already begun cleanup work on the site by removing material consisting of debris piles, roll-off container, and certain partial exterior walls. These funds will now aid in the demolition and remediation process.
"We are extremely pleased to receive $6 million in funding to continue progress at the Exit 29 Site," Montgomery County Business Development Center Director Kenneth F. Rose said. "This announcement is huge news, revitalizing this site opens up a tremendous amount of development opportunities and the transformation will only help to complement what is already a terrific downtown in the village of Canajoharie."
The Mohawk Valley received a total of $11.5 million for 10 projects. Restore New York supports municipal revitalization efforts by awarding funding for projects that will reinvigorate downtowns and generate new economic opportunity. Nearly $81 million was awarded statewide to 71 different municipalities.
Montgomery County prepared, developed and will administer the grant awards, on behalf of the village, which was the official applicant for the Restore NY grant.
"This is outstanding news," Canajoharie Village Mayor Francis Avery said. "The redevelopment of this site is critical to the village's future," he continued. "I'm pleased with the progress that's been made so far and I'm hopeful to see it continue."
